A minimum of 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” declared the head of state.

The president reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were built at an accelerated speed, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "requires swift accountability."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
