The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.
Australia's chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.
There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.
Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.
He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, not just his injury, but additional elements," he commented.
"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."
Past Concerns
The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.
There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in a limited period.
Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.
The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.
Contingency Plans
In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.
Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.
Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."
"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.
"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
